Population & Program Focus

Located in South Salt Lake, this motel-style facility provides safe, stable, short-term housing with onsite support services for approximately 85 families. The program is a key component of the Salt Lake County Ending Family Homelessness Plan, and provides interim housing for families who are experiencing homelessness, including services to find a permanent home or other stable solutions. In addition, this program works closely with the dorm-style Connie Crosby Family Resource Center in Midvale to expand options and decrease turnaways for families experiencing homelessness.

Name & History

Utah families face hardship in a challenging rental market and exceedingly high daycare costs. Especially as eviction moratoriums ended after COVID, Salt Lake Valley was faced with an increasing number of families struggling to maintain housing. With the Connie Crosby Family Resource Center having to turn away families in need, it was clear that additional non-congregate shelter was needed in our community.

Shelter the Homeless created a coalition of funding and support from then Utah State Homeless Services Coordinator Wayne Neiderhauser, Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to purchase a motel and transform it into Utah’s first non-congregate shelter for families.
