Population & Program Focus

Located in South Salt Lake, this resource center serves up to 300 adult men experiencing homelessness by providing emergency shelter and access to comprehensive supportive services. Many residents are navigating barriers including chronic illness, behavioral health conditions, substance use recovery, unemployment, and reentry after incarceration. The center connects individuals to case management, healthcare, treatment services, employment resources, and housing support while helping residents work toward improved well-being and long-term housing stability.

Name & History

Opening in 2019 as the Men's Resource Center, it was the first of three new HRCs as Salt Lake County transitioned to a scattered-site shelter model to replace the former large downtown shelter system with smaller, service-rich facilities located throughout the community. The model was designed to reduce overcrowding, improve safety, better address the distinct needs of different populations experiencing homelessness, and create stronger connections to healthcare, transportation, employment, and supportive services. By separating services across multiple specialized resource centers, providers are better able to deliver trauma-informed care and individualized support in environments designed around the needs of specific populations.

The facility was later renamed in 2022 after Pamela Atkinson in recognition of her decades of compassionate advocacy and unwavering commitment to individuals experiencing homelessness throughout Utah. Widely known for referring to those she serves as “our homeless friends,” Atkinson has spent more than 30 years helping connect vulnerable individuals to shelter, healthcare, housing, food, and other critical services while building broad community support around homelessness issues. Her work has helped humanize the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness and inspired statewide efforts focused on dignity, compassion, and long-term solutions.
