Cherie Wood

South Salt Lake Mayor

Cherie Wood is a lifelong resident of the City of South Salt Lake and began her career with the City 24 years ago. Cherie was elected as South Salt Lake’s first female Mayor in 2009.

As a mother of three boys, Mayor Cherie Wood believes “What I wish for myself and my family, I wish for everyone in my community.” She created the nationally recognized Promise South Salt Lake Initiative, utilizing United Way’s collective impact model and a holistic approach to improving her city. Since then, SSL has seen graduation rates increase 10%, increased average income, 13% increase in property values in one year, increased health care coverage, 14 community centers, and a balanced budget from nearly a $4 million deficit created by a change in sales tax distribution by the legislature— all without raising property taxes.

In 2016, Mayor Wood was selected by the National After School Association as Most Influential in Local Government. Additionally, she was named one of United Way of Salt Lake’s 2016 United for Change award honorees. As a ‘Changemaker,’ Mayor Wood has assembled an impressive team and has set in motion initiatives which will change the face of her city forever.
